Suugaku Joshi Gakuen Ep 2

Hello hello~

The 2nd episode of Suugaku Joshi Gakuen aired yesterday! I watched it twice (without subs though ^_^") and I'm a little disappointed with the situation they came up with for this episode. You'll see what I mean.

In this episode, a new girl is introduced named Shibuya Mami (played by Yajima Maimi, the leader of Morning Musume's younger sister group, ÂșC-ute). She is a fanatic about everything to do with detectives and solving crimes and walks around with handcuffs in her pocket. @.@ Her famous line is "Taiho shichauzo~", which roughly translates to "I'll arrest you~".

The situation for this week's episode is the following: a math test that was suppose to be given out that day is missing and was most likely stolen. Mami finds out that the last person to be in the teacher's office was Kazuki and since everyone knows Kazuki hates math, he would have the most motive to steal the tests. Kazuki, who was entranced by Mami while she accused him, is shocked that he is yet again accused of something he didn't do. An important detail to note is that only the test questions were stolen and not the answer key. If someone really wanted to cheat, they would either steal both or if they could only steal one item, then it would most likely be the answer key. So even though you could work out the test problems ahead of time, you might not necessarily get the right answers and in Kazuki's case, he wouldn't be benefiting much from this.

Nina is unsure about Kazuki stealing the test paper, but he would be the only one to have any motive to steal it. The nurse (played by Niigaki Risa, 5th generation Morning Musume and current leader of said group) says that Nina should help Kazuki out because that's what her sister would have done, even if the person was annoying or troublesome. Nina proposes to Mami that Kazuki is too stupid to answer any of the questions on the test. Mami is in disbelief that Kazuki could be that stupid, so they have a challenge where Kazuki will have to answer math questions of varying difficulties and Nina and Mami will have to guess whether he'll answer the question correctly or not. Whoever has the most amount of right guesses at the end wins. So if Nina wins, Kazuki will no longer be accused of stealing the test. If Mami wins, Kazuki will be sent to the principal's office to be expelled. The loser will have to eat a hot dog, which will be covered with more and more mustard each time Kazuki is unable to answer a question correctly. The mustard is expertly added by the referee. ^_^"

Many math questions are asked starting from university level with integrals, going all the way down to 1st year middle school. Many questions are asked, but not all are shown and since no correct answer is given, I won't be delving into them. The 1st year middle school math question is the one that gets a full solution at the end and it involves a clock. I don't really like the premise of the battle being how "dumb" Kazuki is in math and whether or not he'll be able to solve the questions properly. For all except one question, he doesn't even try (it must be his aversion to math kicking in).

Here's the video where I solve the problem step-by-step:

When I first saw this problem, I didn't really get what was going on at first because there was a lot of talking and I'm not fluent enough in Japanese to catch everything that is said. So I really had to slow everything down (in my head) and go step by step with what I know and what they are saying and linking the parts together so that it makes sense. I do have to say though that Nina did a really thorough job in her explanation this time than in the first episode. I'm guessing it's most likely because she's trying to explain the answer to Kazuki vs the other classmates. Kazuki is saved again by the logic of math. We'll he begin to like it or at least appreciate its existence? We'll just have to keep watching.

The next episode seems very interesting and it seems to involve 4 girls who love to eat and they are played by some of my favourite girls from Hello! Project. I think it's going to get a lot more exciting from now on. Until next week, chau~
